IBM beats earnings forecast, but layoffs and DEI retreat put HR to the test.

IBM's Q1 2025 results boost market confidence, although layoffs and cultural upheavals indicate a deeper transformation; what we've seen today is a strong hint that IBM's HR professionals must navigate job cuts, a harsher return-to-office mandate, and a shift to AI-driven innovation.

On April 23, 2025, IBM reported Q1 2025 earnings of $14.54 billion in revenue, a 0.6% rise year-on-year, and adjusted earnings per share of $1.60, above analyst estimates.

The report demonstrates unrivalled software growth, particularly in Red Hat, as well as a $6 billion generative AI business; nonetheless, IBM stock plummeted 6.8% in after-hours trade as investors became increasingly concerned about dwindling consulting and infrastructure sales.

This reply highlights a larger narrative, namely IBM's shift to AI and cost-effectiveness, which is currently altering its workforce and culture.

IBM's 2025 profit estimate confirms $13 billion in free cash flow and 5% revenue growth, but "accelerated productivity efforts" definitely indicate more layoffs in 2025.

According to reports, 5,000-9,000 jobs would be lost in 2025, following a 4.2% fall in employment in 2024.

How People Are Really Using Gen AI in 2025.

Last year, HBR published an article about how people are using generative AI.

Much has happened in the last twelve months.

We now offer Custom GPTs, which are AI algorithms designed to meet specific criteria; DeepSeek and Grok are newcomers to the market, adding competition and choice; millions of ears perked up when Google introduced NotebookLM, a podcast maker.

OpenAI introduced numerous additional models (with the promise of combining them all into a single unified interface), chain-of-thought thinking, in which AI trades off speed for depth and better responses, came into play.

Voice commands now allow for more and new interactions, such as using Gen AI while driving, and costs have significantly decreased as access has expanded over the last twelve busy months.

Tips for CV making, job search, interviews, and career progression

Your resume (or CV outside the US) is a brief overview of your skills, accomplishments, and interests, both academic and otherwise.

Recruiters often only glance at your CV for a few seconds, so it needs to highlight your key skills and experience quickly and clearly.
