Who is hiring?

Global Labour Market Overview – December 2025.

Global labour markets are generally holding up well, yet they are beginning to show signs of a gradual decline.

In advanced economies, unemployment has slightly increased from its recent lows, including in the United States, indicating a slowdown in hiring rather than a significant downturn.

Across the OECD, unemployment rates are mostly stable, although there are considerable differences between countries, and many emerging markets still grapple with structurally high unemployment, especially among younger individuals.

In developed economies, labour force participation remains robust, but job growth has decelerated as employers take a more cautious approach.

Employment increases are still occurring, particularly in the U.S., but at a slower rate, implying that labour markets are stabilising rather than growing.

Conditions differ significantly by sector and skill level.

There is still strong demand for healthcare, skilled trades, and technical positions, while hiring has slowed in certain professional services and technology sectors.

Young and lower-skilled workers are more vulnerable to the pressures of the labour market.

Long-term structural factors such as ageing populations, technological advancements, and ongoing skills mismatches continue to influence labour market results.

Even with relatively low unemployment rates, worker confidence has diminished, with rising worries about job security.

Regionally, labour market performance is inconsistent across Europe, Asia, emerging markets, and the Middle East and Africa.

Top HR and work-related articles

The Women in the Workplace 2025 study reveals that only 50% of companies are genuinely focusing on advancing women’s careers, marking a continued decline in their commitment to gender diversity over several years.

For the first time, an ambition gap has surfaced: women are showing less interest in promotions compared to men.

This gap is not inherent when women are given the same career support as their male counterparts; their ambition to progress is on par with men’s.

However, women, particularly at both entry and senior levels, encounter less sponsorship and advocacy from managers, which restricts their promotion chances.

Women at entry-level positions receive the least amount of sponsorship, and even when they do, their promotion rates remain lower than those of men.

Some organisations have reduced essential programs that support women’s advancement, such as remote work options, formal sponsorship, and focused career development, which raises concerns about the long-term effects.

The report highlights that this issue is solvable: companies that recommit to empowering women through sponsorship, advocacy, and development initiatives experience improved representation and career results.

The year 2026 should be a time for renewed emphasis on gender diversity in the workplace.

Next year’s significant events are set to address recent policy changes, compliance hurdles, and, naturally, artificial intelligence.

SHRM’s Johnny Taylor Jr. delivers a speech at the 2025 annual conference in San Diego.

SHRM President and CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. engages with attendees during a keynote presentation at the organisation’s annual conference at the San Diego Convention Centre on June 30, 2025, in San Diego, California.

Next year, SHRM will take place in Orlando, Florida.

Next year’s HR conferences are expected to confront some of the most pressing challenges and opportunities within the industry.

Attendees can look forward to discussions on recent policy changes, compliance issues, and, of course, artificial intelligence.

Many events will provide standard conference sessions, while others will include case studies, exhibitions, and networking opportunities.

Additionally, a diverse range of industry-specific events is scheduled for sectors such as education, manufacturing, and construction.
